    Positive Emotions

experiencing happiness, joy, hope, love, gratitude in our lives helps our well-being. It is very important to enjoy yourself in the here and now

    Engagement

when we are truly engaged in a situation or task, we experience a state of flow. time seems to stop and we concentrate intensely on the present. This feels good!

    Relationships

as humans, we are social beings and having good relationships are core to our well-being. we need to connect with others, love others and be loved. Good relationships do matter!

    Meaning and Purpose

meaning comes from serving a cause bigger than ourselves. we all need meaning and purpose in our lives to have a sense of well-being.

    Accomplishment and Achievement

many of us strive to better ourselves, master a skill, achieve a goal, win a competition. by accomplishing goals and experiencing success we can flourish.

When asked ‘are you satisfied with your life?’ your answer depends heavily on the mood you are in. If you are are feeling positive, you can look back on the past with joy; look into the future with hope; and enjoy and appreciate the present.

Positive emotions have a much greater impact than bringing a smile to our face. When we feel good we perform better at work and study; our physical health is boosted; our relationships are strong; we are creative, we take chances, and we feel optimistic and hopeful for the future.

We have all experienced highs and lows in life, but when we dwell on past lows, we suffer. If we worry about the future we become anxious and pessimistic. It is extremely important to recognise our positive emotions so we can enjoy the present without worry and regret.

What is it that makes us feel good? Spending time with friends and family, hobbies, exercising, nature or eating great food. We need to ensure there is always room in our lives for these things.

Positive Psychology research has identified certain skills and exercises that can boost our experience of positive emotions. We can learn to feel them more strongly, and to experience them for longer. If we learn to cultivate positive feelings about life, we begin to hope for the best, see the upside, and learn to take opportunities when they come along.
